Leading Apple App Developer Gives Away Its Trade Secrets To Startups

A leading European app developer is laying its trade secrets bare with the publication of a digital white paper containing strategy and implementation tips.

The guide, titled “4 Things To Consider Before Developing An iPad App,” has been written by the team behind Synergy Digital, an approved Apple iPad and Apple iPhone developer.

App pedigree

Synergy has produced apps used by the likes of fashion retailers Asos and Boden, for auctioneer Sothebys, and for leading magazine titles like GQ, Esquire and Wired, so it knows what it is talking about.

Created to “help companies and those new to the field to build apps that really stand out”, the digital paper is introduced by Jony Ive, senior vice president of design at Apple.

He says, “Different and new is relatively easy. Doing something that’s genuinely better is very hard.”

Four things to consider

Using this as a starting point, 4 Things To Consider Before Developing An iPad App talks readers through “the nitty-gritty of planning and strategy”. With tips centred around four crucial pre-development areas, the guide challenges readers to consider what the app should do?, should there be a cost to users?, how should it look?, and how easy will it be to use?

Synergy Digital says, “The whitepaper helps those new to app development to focus and organise their thoughts and planning sessions, giving a tried and tested structure to the tricky business of building a useful, engaging and successful app first time out.”

Tablet growth

The Warwickshire, West Midlands, UK company has published the whitepaper at a time of massive growth in global shipments of tablets, which according to analysts are expected to grow to 383.3 million units in 2017. That compares to 72.7 million units in 2011 – an increase of 427 percent.

A recent Compuware study found that 85 percent of people who own an iPad would rather use an app than a mobile website when making a purchase.

The whitepaper is full of practical business tips, as well as design ones. It points out that with any paid for iPad app or in app purchases, Apple will take a 30 percent cut. If developers publish a free app and send customers to their own ecommerce website to buy things there, they keep all the cash.

And once users get to a product, says the paper, iPad users are four times as likely to buy than an iPhone user, and 99.9 percent as likely as a desktop user.

Stand out

Elliott Clarkson, Synergy head of iPad development says, “As Jony Ive comments, doing something that’s better isn’t just doing something new. A lot of new apps are built every day but only the best ones stand out.

“We developed the digital white paper to advise those who are about to embark on the path of building an app for the first time.”

Clarkson says, “We have focused it right at the beginning of the journey, setting out the four key things we think every company should consider – the most important questions to ask before deciding to press ahead with developing an iPad app or series of apps.”
